I always said I'd "never be self employed" but am getting too old to do all the work for someone else. I'm exploring all kinds of work from home opportunities. To that end..... Can someone please help me understand what a 'home inventory' business is (I know what a home inventory is) and how one gets started?

In my service area I am the only company performing this service. I did my research on the Internet comparing different pricing structures of other companies performing this same service from different areas of the country.
I found that the pricing ranges from about $295.00 and up. If you do your research and check out those sites that post their prices on-line you will find out what different areas are charging and getting paid for their service. Then look at your own area, and decided on your own pricing structure. Go with what you feel is a good price for your service. Do not underestimate the value of what you are providing. I have my pricing listed here in this forum. Just search for my user name. You should find it.
Hope this helps. __________________ Carl Carick

This is the first time that I heard about this business and I am really curious. Is this a worldwide industry? I mean does this kind of industry exist in other countries? |

Having home inventory documentation is necessary for all insured property owners regardless of where in the world you are located. If you have to make a claim for a loss, you have to be able to provide the details on your property. No insurance company is going to write you a check without supporting documentation. |

A home Inventory business is a great business for those who are new to self employment. It requires very little in the way of initial outlay and can be both enjoyable and profitable. |

Providing home inventory services requires going to a customer's home to document and photograph their property for the home inventory reports that you create for them. Like any service, you have to be credible and trustworthy. I don't think that this type of service lends itself very well to ebay. I get most of my customers through personal contact with them or a referral from someone they trust. I wouldn't advertise my services on ebay or craigslist. Doing so, in my opinion, would diminish my reputation that I've worked so hard to establish. |

Just curious to the response of Abyss - how are you able to categorize the business as being simple and easy? Dont get me wrong - I think it is a great service but there is work both in conducting the inventory as well as the work to create the files. thanks. |

jlkford- I think that how simple a business is can be just a matter of perspective. How one person perceives what one or another is doing. Everything seems hard when you are starting out. Yes, there is work to be done. Conducting the inventory, putting the data together, producing the final package.
But, if you enjoy what you are doing, getting out of the cubicle, talking to different people everyday. Rather than just going to an office, getting that morning cup of office coffee, and dragging through another day, another meeting, etc., etc...
Need I say more?
