I kept saying it would be nice to see more people involved with discussion so I decided I would start with me.

Hi all, I'm just getting ready to purchase my business kit at the end of this month and intend to get started as soon as possible. I hope to start out part time but work hard to make it a full time source of income. My husband will be working with me on the side lines but the business will be mine.

I currently have a full time job but we are living paycheck to paycheck and we need to supplement our income to support soon to be 3 teenagers, a dog and 3 cats. What I have now is a job, but I'm looking for a career.

I look forward to getting to know everyone here as I go along, so far I am very impressed with the business, the system and the people here.

After 30 years in the technology field working mostly in the local government area (although I did work as an IS manager at a small insurance company for 4 years), I thought it was time for a change.

I purchased the KC Home Inventory Kit in January and am just finishing up getting my new business in order and ready to introduce myself to the public and start getting my hands dirty. I have a booth at one of the largest home expos the first of March and have begin making appointments with insurance agents and financial planners in the area. After completing a few practice inventories for family and friends I am looking forward to meeting lots of interesting folks and hopefully giving them a little more peace of mind.

I wish everyone out there well and look forward to sharing stories and helpful hints as I start out on this new adventure.

Yes Our Inventory Service Rocks

First time to post here but have been following the threads.

I have only been in business for 6 months now in British Columbia and it is very time consuming and hard to get the word out about this type of service and WHY you should have it done, but here is a beautiful success story.

One of my first customers was a copy/print shop. Well on Feb 2nd, the stip mall that the business was in burned to the ground. I felt really bad for the owner, but felt good about him having his inventory done.

WRONG.....despite clear instructions to store his inventories OFF-SITE, both sets of inventory I did for him were in the shop and they were lost as well.

BUT, when I had completed his inventory I had asked him if he wanted me to store his info or delete it. He said he didn't care, I could do whatever I wanted with it. I KEPT IT!!! He arrived at my office on the day of the fire and I was able to re-produce his inventory for the adjuster.

Needless to say he was ecstatic and very relieved.

I am now waiting to hear how he is making out with his insurance claim.

By the way, we discovered he was $10,000 UNDER-insured when we did the inventory and unfortunately he didn't go see his agent to increase his coverage, but it could have been worse.

This is why I do what I do. The amount of peace of mind we can give our customers is priceless.

So for those, like me, that might tend to get discouraged by the initial slow start and sales of our new businesses....hang in there. It does take time.

Hello fellow Home Inventory Professionals!

I purchased KC Home Inventory back in October 2011 on impulse because I wanted to start a meaningful business where I can provide a service and help people protect their assets. I have a BA in Criminal Justice, which should give me some credibility when its time for me to market this service to potential clients. I did a few "practice" inventories on family member houses to gain experience, but I haven't had my first real customer. I hope to share those experiences in the near future once I really get my business out there!

After researching several Inventory Companies and talking with Rick Bell, I made my decision to purchase KC.

Hello, I have my own Home Inspection business and am going to add to it by starting to do Home Inventories and Documentation. I think it will be a nice mix. I plan on giving gift certificates to each of my Home Inspection clients to use towards a Home Inventory Service. To me this is a great time to do the inventory when they are moving in. Any ideas or thoughts are welcome.

I am interested in corresponding with other professionals in the west central Ohio area.

We looked at several Inventory Companies before we selected KC and the decision to buy KC was based partly on what we saw on the forums. We knew that if we decided to go along with this, we would have the support of other Home Inventory Professionals even if no one else supported us. How GREAT is that? lol..

First attempt

Today I tried to start an inventory for my parent's house and I have a lot of questions...

I started in their family room and that one room took me 1 and a half hours. They have so much stuff it is ridiculous. Every shelf has about 3 or 4 things on it that are not easily categorized. How do I know what to call things? My dad has been to Africa many times and they have a bunch of wooden figurines/ African animals/ statues of people. Then they just have all kinds of decorative stuff that I'm not sure what to call. Any ideas on naming things?

What do you do when people have cabinets full of just junk? Do you pull out everything and list what it is? For example a cabinet full of random things like paper, magazines, crafts, votives, old cassette tapes, and just in general crap. None of this has barely any value. Can I skip junk areas?

My most important question is this... Do I have to assign values to each item? Or could I just list the items without a value? Figuring out vales for some of these items could be impossible. I couldn't even give an educated guess. What do I do?

Do my numbers need to be completely accurate? Do I need to count every single fork and spoon, etc? Or can I just estimate 12 of each and move on? Counting things out could add hours.

I don't understand how some of you can complete an inventory in less than 4 hours. I had about 120 items listed for just one room!!! That doesnt even count the multiple quantities. I don't see how there is any way to expedite this when there are so many things in a house.

Please help!! It seems so overwhelming.

I did my first inventory on Saturday

I did a small lake cottage that is used for a vacation rental. My sister's cottage. I thought it would be a good starting point because it had household stuff, my not cluttered at all, small, and easily done.

I did what I call my "Express" inventory. Several wide angle shots of each room. Plus document the electronics and appliances.

Then I did a more indepth inventory, furniture and items of each room, bedding, linen closet, cupboard contents, bathroom contents.

Photos of exterior.

It went well. Took approx 1 1/2 hours. It was small, very organized, and not a lot of stuff.

My biggest obstacle was taking the photos, as ther were times my camera would not flash because of the lighting coming in. Otherwise all the photos appear to have come out well. Now to enter the information. That is my next step. Hope that goes as easy.

I would like to look up all the post of some of the members here as I am sure they have a lot of useful info. Do you have to be a member for a certain period of time here before being able to find post by a certain member?

Found KC many years ago and was drawn to it then but was unable to financial purchase the kit. Things are financially good now and I overheard the gentleman I work with here at Edward Jones Investments telling his son-in-law that it would be good for him to do a video of the contents of his home, and I had a flash back of KC home inventory and immediately started doing research, and not to my surprise found it even better than it was. Looking at purchasing and starting the business's with the help of my son and daughter.

Someone give me feed back as to your success or downfall with the business. Just curious as to the potential out there of how receptive people are of the idea.

I know there is a great need and I live in the town that in the past two years was hit by tornado's and destroyed many homes and businesses.
