Starting a Home Inventory Business with a friend

Hi There! I am so happy to find this site and the software. I have been hanging onto this business idea for quite a few years thinking there was no market for it. So, I am very excited to start a Home Inventory Business and want to include my best friend. However, I'm not sure how to go about this as I have had the idea, business plan and structure for quite awhile. How do you successfully structure this business without losing your friendship? Could others on this site share with me how they have the business setup for success with a partner?

Starting Out

I saw this,ad in a magazine two weeks ago. I investigated every inch if the website and after thinking about it decided to take the plunge. I have been unemployed since late September and have found it difficult to find a job. I have been in real estate management for 7 years. I have 3 months if unemployment left and I am not only nervous about what we will do when I no longer get benefits I am worried about making this work . Any advice you all can give would be appreciated. My office is set up and ready to go. I am curious about what you all charge for fees both initially and yearly update. Thank you.

Hi everybody! Just ordered my kit, business cards on the way and most of the legal stuff is done! Really excited about working for myself and making this happen. One question I do have and not seeing it addressed is personal safety. Going into private homes makes me nervous. I've spoken to the police and they gave me some good ideas but what do you do in the field to protect yourselves? Thank you.

Hi folks! I enjoy reading your board. There is a lot of insightful information and advice on here that is beneficial for a newbie like myself.

I am currently an insurance agent, but have seen the need for a service like this for a long time. I've heard several stories of loss and how people wish they would've had a comprehensive home inventory they could've fallen back on. Needless to say, I am interested in either starting a new business or incorporating the home inventory into our agency services somehow.

Hi I'm new to this ,I am from Christchurch in nz and after all of our earthquakes and the real need for an inventory service I have decided to try this , I used to have a DVD rental store but the earthquakes destroyed it and I have written a business plan for an inventory service last year but never moved forward with it , so now with the help of kc I am very excited to start this venture , does anyone know how long the pack usually takes to arrive

New to the business

Hello Everyone!!!
My husband and I both have a history in law enforcement, he as a deputy and myself as a dispatcher. For a while now we have been contemplating doing this and finally decided to go in with both feet. Being in law enforcement, as some others have mentioned, we see daily reports of peoples possessions being stolen or lost. No one ever has serial numbers, descriptions, etc. As a dispatcher, I can't enter anything into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) without a serial number. Officers also cannot use other tools available to them without vital numbers and information on the items taken. Its sad, but all to common, that no one records any of this information. Especially when it comes to high costing valuables and weapons. So we want to be able to serve our community in a way that makes them feel that they have taken one extra step to help keep them safe

New Home Inventory Business Owner

Hello Everyone.

I just started my home inventory business about a month ago in Western North Carolina. I come from a 27 year law enforcement career. I also suffered a catastrophic house fire in 2009 and after having to hire a public adjuster to prepare my claim and submit it to my insurance company as well as the hurricanes I went thru living in South Florida. I think that these experiences will give me a perspective that will assist my clients with preparing their inventories.

Any advice is welcome

New to the board and the business and glad to be here. Received my package last week and have been dutifully reviewing and absorbing all the info. Have a few administrative items remaining to do and a couple more items coming from Amazon and I'll be ready to kick this thing off.

Hiring Employees

Question for anyone who has hired employee's. (Other than family members) Where did you conduct the interview? Do you have an office besides your home? Where do they work from? Do you only call them when you have an inventory to do or do they do other full time work for you? What is the process of hiring an employee for tax purposes, benefits, etc?
I ran an add for a position and got an overwhelming immediate response.

Hello all! Almost ready to start into the home inventory world in MN. My brother and I started off a little over a month ago getting everything together and it has been interesting We have both been independent insurance adjusters for the last 4 years, roaming the states from storm to storm. I have seen over 800 claims, and not one person had an inventory for me to see. Many didn't have the right endorsements to cover their losses either! For me its easy to see why this business is so important,t and the service your providing is essential!!! I adjusted a fire in AZ that was a total loss, I asked the insured what did he have in the home....."Everything" he said. Now it was up to me to write the policy limits on what I could recognize. If I can't see it I can't write it, that's how insurance works. Only if he would have had his contents recorded!

I'm excited to get started and it should be smoother doing the inventory before the loss than after If any of you would have any questions about the insurance side of things feel free to fire away.

I am looking at starting a Home Inventory Business in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I have many questions but I will ask a few now and save others for later. First, has anyone started their business in a small market and what have been your results?

After reading the forums there seems to be a consensus of doing the visual inventory and manually listing the customers assests then transferring the findings to the software. Is this a safe assumption or did I miss read the responses? Along those same lines, I read in one blog stating it generally takes 2-3 hours for the average size homes and an comparable amount of time to enter the data into the Home Inventory software for a total of 4-6 hours per inventory. Is that a reasonable time frame?

I have yet to buy the software package because I am evaluating the business opportunity but I am curious to know it the software is fairly easy to master?

I am sure I will have many more questions but I will start with these questions.
